Student Groups/Activities

Academic Team is a group of students that represent Smith Elementary in a regional competition of quick recall league. A quick recall league is a competition that involves answering questions in Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Humanities. Team members have buzzers and can buzz when they know the answer to a question. It is similar to Jeopardy, but not exactly the same.  Four team members compete at a time against other teams.

About Us

Crazy 8's Math Club is a fun, engaging after-school program designed to spark students' interest in math through hands-on activities and games. Aimed at children in grades 3-5, the club offers a variety of creative projects aimed at exploring essential math concepts. The goal is to make math enjoyable and approachable, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving skills in a lively environment. It's a great way for kids to build confidence in their math abilities while having a blast!

• Space is limited to 16 students in total. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis

• Meets weekly on Wednesday from 3:45 - 4:45 pm at Smith

About Us

The Hayward Smith Honor choir is an audition-based ensemble made up of 4th and 5th grade students who love to sing. We perform at various functions throughout the year and meet every Thursday after school where we work on good vocal technique and other musicianship skills. Our 5th grade students also have a special concert every spring where all 5th grade honor choir students in the district gather together and put on a big concert that is one of the highlights of the year.

About Us

In this engaging program, students will learn coding fundamentals, research global challenges, and develop innovative solutions. Their efforts will culminate in a tournament held in November, providing an exciting opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity.

Students are working throughout the year to earn miles while running, jogging and walking with their friends and some family.

• Open to 3rd-5th Grade students

• Meeting weekly, Wednesday, 4:00-5:00 pm

• Only 20 slots are available for the Fall semester (return the form from the flyer ASAP). It will be first come, first serve.

• Transportation home is not available and students will either need to walk home or be picked up by a parent.

•  Since Run Club is a privilege, Run Club teachers hold the right to dismiss a student for behavioral issues or after 3 unexcused absences to allow students on the waitlist an opportunity to join. Late pickups will also result in being dismissed.

The Cubik's Kingdom is new to Smith this year! Students will learn how to solve a traditional 3x3 Rubik's Cube throughout the term of their time in the club.

Safety Patrol is committed to building positive relationships at Hayward Smith Elementary. Student leaders in the fifth grade have taken on the responsibility to ensure that their school remains a safe place for all students to learn and grow daily. Student leaders are responsible for assigning students to class and assisting teachers in monitoring any unsafe behavior during arrival and dismissal each day. Safety Patrol promotes leader mentorship among fourth and third-grade students. These students will accompany the safety patrol in their duties in the fourth quarter of the school year. Safety Patrol is enhancing the culture of cooperation and kindness at Hayward Smith Elementary.

Our Smith News Crew is made up of 5th graders dedicated to keeping the school community informed and engaged. Each morning, our students deliver exciting updates, important announcements, and inspiring stories that celebrate our students and staff.  We aim to foster a positive school environment and encourage participation in various activities. To join the News Crew, students must be in 5th grade, fill out an application, and complete an interview.
